What Kind of Photo Business?

It’s not enough to say you want to have business in photography. That’s just too general.  You’ve got to narrow that down and decide what kind of photo business you want.

It’s sort of like being a doctor.  There are general practitioners, but there are also a lot of specialists because it can be an entire life’s work just knowing all about one particular field, and becoming an expert on your chosen subject.

It’s the same with photographers.  Although freelance photographers may come closest to being like the general practitioner, but they also often concentrate on a certain type of pictures that they are good at obtaining, and that there is a market for those types of photos.  (It doesn’t do any good to take great pictures that nobody wants!  This is a photo BUSINESS, so you’ve got to make money!)

So before you go full speed ahead, you need to take some time and figure out what sort of photo business appeals most to you.  It helps a lot if you enjoy your work!  If you don’t like what you’re doing with your starting a new photo business, you might as well just keep whatever work you’re in.

So enjoy your work!

More considerations when starting a business in photography!

But it’s not all about “do what you love and the money will follow.”

For instance, if what you love is taking pictures of the inside of dark wells, and for some strange reason there is not market for a shot in the dark… then you’re not going to make much money are you?

And the idea is to not only enjoy your work, but earn money with pictures!

Now how much money you want to make is another question.  Are you looking to make a living out of your photo business, or do you just want to earn a little extra money on the side?  Some businesses work fine as a part-time endeavor, while others would be better suited to working full-time.

So it helps to not only know what you enjoy, but how much time you have to devote to your new photography business.

Part-time or Full-time.
That’s one of the first steps in deciding what kind of photo business you want.
