How Do You Start A Photography Business?

Have you ever wondered: “How do you start a photography business?”

If you have an interest in photography and would like to start your own business, it’s certainly a question worth asking!

One of the first things to decide is what kind of photography you’re most interested in.  Most people have a favorite photo subject, and enjoy taking one sort of pictures more than others.  Since people usually take more pictures of their favorite subjects, they usually have better skills getting good pictures of that type.  That’s a good start!

However, you need more than good photography skills.  You need to have some business skills.  There are some things necessary to all small business ventures, including marketing and bookeeping and more.  If you have the money to hire experts to do these things, or can partner with someone with the necessary skills, you’re good to go.  If not, you’ll need to learn to do some of these things yourself.

Some things you can learn online for free.  Another resource for business skills is through Score (Service Corps Of Retired Executives).  They offer many free services for small business including the following:

  • Ask SCORE Online: Choose a mentor and ask him/her your biz question.
  • Visit Your Local SCORE Office: Make an appointment with a mentor or attend a workshop.
  • Online Workshops: Try a free, online workshop or register for a lunch-time webinar.
  • Business eNewsletters: Biz tips and interview with leading experts. Read samples.

If you are interested in meeting with someone face to face, you can find out the location of the nearest SCORE office by checking out their website.

Another way to get help starting a photography business is to look for a mentor.  Sometimes you can work as an assistant to an established pro photographer, and learn the ropes that way.  Or perhaps you can find someone doing the kind of business you’d like to establish who would be willing to offer you advice on starting your own photography business.  If you choose to try this, be sure you find someone in a non-competitive location to where you want to start your business.  It wouldn’t be very fair to ask someone to help you learn how to start a business, then set one up in direct competition to them after they were nice enough to help you out!

A popular option is to buy a course on starting a photography business.  Some of these are very generalized and can give you an overview of a photography business.  Others are more specific and can help you with advice on starting exactly the kind of photo business you’d like.

For example, do you enjoy taking portraits of people or pets?  You can get a free e-course on this, “Secret Of Making $2,970.00 In One Weekend Photographing People and Pets”…  It’s got an online book you can read or print out, and you get 6 free lessons via email.  It’s a great way to check out this type of photography business to see if it appeals to you!

If you’re not sure what kind of photography business you’d like to try, check out StartingPhotoBusiness.com for a great resource book.  Then you’ll know the answer to “How do you start a photography business?”
